Ride Solution Executive Director Boyd Thompson

Ride Solution Executive Director Boyd Thompson addressed the Palatka City Commission on Jan. 11, urging them to ask state officials for additional funding for public transportation to rural counties after a state-wide cut last year.

The Ride Solution buses are the City and county’s only form of public transportation and primarily serve low-income and elderly residents.

Also speaking was visually impaired resident Darlene Liable-Crowe, who shared her reliance on the bus service with the Commission.

“Ride Solutions is a resource in our City. Over the past year, I have used Ride Solutions to go to the doctor, to medical appointments, to the gym, and to get my hair cut. But now it has been reduced to medical appointments only,” Liable-Crowe told the Commission, “I know I am not alone.

There are many in our County, in our City, that are elderly, disabled, and unemployed that do not have transportation. They are being isolated to the point that is going to affect their mental health, their emotional health, and then their physical health.”

The City Commission unanimously approved a resolution asking the state legislature to restore funding for rural transportation.
