PALATKA, Fla. - The contractor working for Florida Power and Light to replace the streetlights lining St. Johns Avenue in Palatka is planning to start work on the project on Tuesday, May 23, at 10 a.m.

As part of the continuing effort to improve downtown Palatka, FL&L, working with the City of Palatka, will replace the existing 30-year-old lights along St. Johns Avenue from 11th St. to 4th St. with new 118 historically accurate, energy-efficient LED streetlights.

The first part of the project will update the underground wiring and infrastructure for the lights. It is projected to be completed by June 3. The work is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday. However, there will be a temporary suspension of work on Friday, May 24, due to the Blue Crab Festival. Because of Blue Crab, no work will be conducted in the festival section of the street, and it will resume after the event is over.

After completing part one, the old streetlights lining the road will be removed and replaced. The whole project is scheduled to be finished by August. Although the work will cause some traffic and parking disruptions, every effort will be made to keep them to a minimum, and no road closures are planned.

“We understand that a project like this can be an inconvenience to people and businesses, but we will work very hard to keep the disruptions to a minimum,” said Jake Marshal, a manager for the contractor doing the work for FPL.

The installation of the lights is part of a larger multimillion-dollar project to make improvements to St. Johns Avenue in downtown Palatka that includes new landscaping, sidewalks, curbs, intersections and benches.

For more information about the project, visit the city’s website at Palatka-fl.gov or call City Hall at (386) 329-0100.
